Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive underwriting experience in property, casualty, or specialty lines with demonstrated expertise in complex accounts.
  • Proven track record of advising underwriting teams and influencing strategic risk decisions.
  • Experience working with regulatory compliance frameworks and insurance rating methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate complex and high-value submissions to determine risk acceptance, pricing strategy, and coverage terms.
  • Provide expert consultation and mentoring to underwriters on risk analysis, policy structuring, and portfolio management.
  • Develop and implement underwriting guidelines, best practices, and quality control measures to maintain compliance and reduce exposure.
  • Collaborate with actuarial, legal, and product teams to design innovative insurance solutions and pricing models.
  • Analyze market trends, loss ratios, and competitor data to inform product positioning and underwriting strategy.
  • Assist in resolving escalated underwriting issues and negotiating terms with brokers and clients on specialty risks.
  • Contribute to training programs, thought leadership initiatives, and technology adoption to enhance underwriting capabilities.

The Underwriting Consultant provides advanced expertise in assessing, analyzing, and managing complex risk exposures, offering strategic guidance to underwriters and business leaders. This role ensures underwriting practices align with organizational objectives, market standards, and regulatory requirements while driving profitable growth and delivering insights for complex or specialized accounts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive underwriting experience in property, casualty, or specialty lines with demonstrated expertise in complex accounts.
  • Proven track record of advising underwriting teams and influencing strategic risk decisions.
  • Experience working with regulatory compliance frameworks and insurance rating methodologies.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation is preferred.
  • Associate in Underwriting (AU) certification is an advantage.
  • State-specific insurance licenses may be required depending on jurisdiction.
FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
  • Advanced risk assessment and policy analysis skills.
  • Strong negotiation and decision-making capabilities.
  • Proficiency in underwriting systems, data analytics tools, and reporting platforms.
  • Deep understanding of insurance products, regulations, and market dynamics.
  • Leadership ability to mentor and guide diverse underwriting teams.

The annual base salary for this position is $220,000.00 - $280,000.00.
