Job summary

The Senior Veterinary Assistant (SVA) at the ASPCA Community Medicine team works with veterinarians, technicians, and clients to prepare animals for surgery, enter medical records, and monitor anesthesia. This on-site role is based at the South LA Clinic with occasional coverage at other Greater LA-area locations.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED, strong computer skills, and a genuine commitment to animal welfare. English is required; bilingual abilities are a plus.

Qualifications

• Experience using a computer and navigating software applications.
• Ability to lift and carry 40-plus pounds repeatedly throughout day with assistance.
• Ability to work standing for 8 or more hours.
• Fear Free Shelter certification is required within 60 days of hire.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong interest in animal welfare and serving underserved communities.

Responsibilities

• Care for cats and dogs daily presenting for spay/neuter surgery up to calculated clinic capacity.
• Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals and clients using low-stress handling techniques.
• Monitor vital signs of sedated patients in pre-op, operative, and post-op phases.
• Take direction regarding medical protocols from the clinic veterinarian or veterinary technician.
• Enter medical information into digital databases.
• Greet clients and assist with intake and service documents; flag relevant medical history.
• Explain information provided by the veterinarian about an animal’s condition to clients.
