Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC, seeks a Utility Systems Repairer/Operator (Operator-In-Charge) to manage and maintain the VA Medical Center’s utility plants.

You will oversee boiler, chiller, BAS, and related systems across the campus and clinics in the local area. You will perform rounds, readings, and logs, troubleshoot and repair equipment, and complete preventive maintenance and work orders.

Qualifications

• EXPERIENCE: Evidence of training or experience sufficient to perform duties; not required to have a specific length of training.
• EVALUATION: Applicants will be rated according to OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
• SCREEN-OUT: Qualifications screened for minimal acceptable requirements before further rating.
• Experience can include volunteer work and National Service programs.

Responsibilities

• Operate and supervise utility plants and related systems at the Washington, DC VAMC.
• Perform hourly rounds, document readings, and maintain logs and turnover.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment, perform preventive maintenance, and complete work orders.
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and diagrams.
• Use hand tools, power tools, and test equipment for repairs and maintenance.
• Repair pumps, bearings, seals, valves, piping, and motors; insulate and re-pipe systems as needed.
• Install new equipment and systems within journeyman level scope as directed.
• Monitor alarms and control systems; coordinate with hospital policy for safety and notifications.
• Ensure safe operation and efficiency of steam heat exchangers, coils, and related equipment.
• Routinely collect water samples, perform chemical tests, and treat water to proper levels.
• Work in plant areas requiring lifting, climbing, and bending; maintain safety and cleanliness of the plant.
