Job summary

The Department of Metropolitan Development of the City of Indianapolis and Marion County seeks a planner to support zoning and land use petitions, review site plans, prepare staff reports, and present findings at public hearings. You will research site characteristics, communicate with petitioners, and coordinate with other departments.

Applicants should hold a city planning degree with 2 years of experience; strong writing and public speaking skills are required, and ArcMap/Microsoft Office

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in city planning or related field; American Planning Association accreditation preferred.
• Two (2) years of experience in a planning and zoning agency; master’s degree may substitute.
• Thorough understanding of land use terminology, zoning principles, current land use law, and regulatory techniques.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ArcMap; strong writing and public speaking skills.

Responsibilities

• Draft blurbs of filed requests for legal advertisement and mailed notification.
• Review legal notices for accuracy.
• Review petition file contents for accuracy and completeness (site plan, legal description, findings of facts).
• Conduct site visits and document findings with photos.
• Present initial research at weekly staff meetings.
• Research subject site including location, nature of request, and compliance potential.
• Communicate with petitioners and interested parties; prepare staff reports.
• Present staff findings at public hearings and ensure letters reflect decisions.
