Job summary

SEIU Local 1021 is seeking a Lead Communicator to manage all aspects of communications in support of core goals for campaigns in Northern California. You will design strategic plans, write for diverse media, and oversee staff across multiple campaigns and regions.

Responsibilities include producing press materials, coordinating events, maintaining the Local website, and guiding staff to advance messaging for workers and the labor movement. Travel and irregular hours are expected.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of professional experience in communications and press relations for unions or progressive campaigns or non-profit organizations
• Public sector experience preferred
• Understanding of graphic design principles
• Experience using email marketing and advocacy tools
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Experience with social media and online tools (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube)
• Commitment to racial, gender and economic justice

Responsibilities

• Design and present strategic campaign plans across traditional and new media.
• Design, write and edit publications, talking head pieces, broadcast scripts, brochures, newsletters and feature stories
• Develop curriculum, materials and training for staff and members on communication methods
• Coordinate all aspects of press conferences and media events, including press releases and advisories
• Capture and edit photos and video for production materials
• Produce coordinated communication across the local across multiple platforms
• Maintain SEIU Local 1021 website with campaign and member information
• Lead communications staff across campaigns, regions and industries
• Review team work plans and provide actionable feedback
• Lead special projects to expand the Local’s communications capacity
• Act as an internal agent of change to drive new thinking
