Job Summary

A Senior Underwriting Counsel evaluates risk and determines insurability of high-liability and high-risk transactions, ensures compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and manages complex underwriting. This role involves collaborating with various departments, including risk management, claims, and policy development, to support the organization's underwriting operations and our business partners.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate risk and exposures on high-liability and high-risk transactions to determine insurability.
• Communicate underwriting solutions effectively to agents, direct offices, and counsel.
• Respond promptly to inquiries and requests.
• Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and rate manuals.
• Lead special projects as assigned.
• Conduct seminars and training at industry events and for internal and external customers.
• Support business partners.

Baseline Criteria

• Extensive knowledge of state and federal laws affecting title insurance and real property, including coverage in title insurance policies and endorsements.
• Ability to craft creative resolutions to complex issues.
• Conflict resolution skills and ability to foster a positive work environment and strong relationships with customers and team members.
• Excellent listening skills.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Working knowledge of business and best practices, gained through understanding Stewart’s goals and key initiatives and experience.
• Ability to work independently with limited oversight.
• Proactive initiative-taking.

Experience

• At least ten years of experience working in the real property field, preferably as an attorney.
