Job Description

Job Summary

A Senior Underwriting Counsel evaluates risk and determines insurability of high-liability and high-risk transactions, ensures compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and manages complex underwriting. This role involves collaborating with various departments, including risk management, claims, and policy development, to support the organization's underwriting operations and our business partners.

Responsibilities

1. Evaluate risk and exposures on high-liability and high-risk transactions to determine insurability.
2. Communicate underwriting solutions effectively to agents, direct offices, and counsel.
3. Respond promptly to inquiries and requests.
4. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and rate manuals.
5. Lead special projects as assigned.
6. Conduct seminars and training at industry events and for internal and external customers.
7. Support business partners.

Baseline Criteria

• Extensive knowledge of state and federal laws affecting title insurance and real property, including coverage in title insurance policies and endorsements.
• Ability to craft creative resolutions to complex issues.
• Ability to resolve conflicts and foster a positive work environment, building strong relationships with customers and team members.
• Excellent listening skills.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Understanding of Stewart's goals and initiatives, with a working knowledge of business practices.
• Ability to work independently with limited oversight.
• Proactive in taking initiative.

Experience

• Attorney with at least ten years of experience in the real property field.
