Job summary

Howden, a global insurance group, is seeking a Senior Underwriter for the Transactional Risk division in Philadelphia. You will shape underwriting frameworks, manage a portfolio of complex risks, and drive profitability while coordinating with a team of underwriters in the workers' compensation area.

You will balance risk, coverage needs, and profitability, mentoring others and expanding broker relationships.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in risk management, finance, business, or related field preferred.
• CPCU, AU or similar certifications preferred.
• 5–8 years of underwriting experience.
• Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
• Willingness to travel 10–25% for client meetings or conferences.

Responsibilities

• Underwrite complex insurance risks within granted authority.
• Ensure submissions meet underwriting standards and profitability.
• Curate a portfolio per Underwriting Guidelines with pricing tools.
• Identify changes in risk exposures and market trends to maximize profitability.
• Collaborate with the Manager to define and achieve team production goals.
• Review referrals from Underwriters and Associate Underwriters.
• Provide guidance and mentoring to team members; may lead 1–2 reports.
• Execute annual new and renewal business goals and hit premium targets.
• Build relationships with producers and travel for events as needed.
• Gather information to quote and bind accounts; communicate market intelligence.
