Job summary

Westfield Specialty Insurance seeks an experienced production Underwriter for our Financial Institutions Retail team in New York, NY. The role focuses on pursuing new business, servicing renewals, and delivering underwriting solutions for broker partners while upholding high underwriting care.

You will work with retail brokers nationwide, focusing on the New York region, and will build a profitable portfolio across Private Equity Funds, Hedge Funds, Banks, and other financial institution risks.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of Financial Lines and/or D&O underwriting experience.
• Strong technical knowledge of Financial Lines products and underwriting practices.
• Bachelor's degree required, finance-related coursework preferred.
• Solid writing and communication skills.

Overview

We are seeking an experienced production Underwriter to join our Financial Institutions Retail team based in our New York, NY office. The Financial Institutions Underwriter is responsible for pursuing new business opportunities, servicing renewals, and working to provide solutions to our key broker partners while upholding a high standard of underwriting care.

This position will work with retail brokers across the United States with a focus on the New York, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and West Coast regions, and will have the opportunity to build a profitable portfolio of primary and excess placements comprised of Private Equity Funds, Hedge Funds, Venture Capital Funds, Banks, Insurance Companies, REITs, Specialty Finance Companies, Exchanges, other risks within the Financial Institution ecosystem.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the continued growth of a dynamic and evolving Financial Institutions portfolio while building strong market relationships and underwriting expertise.

Role And Responsibilities

• Support the growth and profitability of the Financial Institutions portfolio in alignment with the team's underwriting strategy.
• Develop and maintain a strong understanding of underwriting objectives, appetite, and strategy within the assigned territory.
• Underwrite new and renewal business in accordance with company guidelines, authority levels, and underwriting standards.
• Analyze risk exposures, pricing adequacy, and coverage structures to drive profitable underwriting decisions.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients to support retention and new business development.
• Participate in underwriting peer review discussions and underwriting committee meetings, as required.
• Collaborate with internal business partners across underwriting, claims, actuarial, and product management functions.
• Gather competitive intelligence and market insights to support product development and strategic initiatives.
• Represent the company at industry events, broker meetings, and client engagements.
• Travel as required to support business development and relationship management activities.

Desired Skills And Experience

• Minimum of 2 years of Financial Lines and/or D&O underwriting experience; Financial Institutions underwriting experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong technical knowledge of Financial Lines products and underwriting practices with the ability to develop and maintain market expertise.
• Bachelor's degree required, preference given to candidates with coursework or concentration in Finance, Business, Economics, Risk Management, Insurance, or a related field.
• Solid Writing and Communication Skills
• Excellent organizational skills, and ability to multi-task
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
• Willingness to travel
• Must be able to think originally, be willing to challenge ideas and be receptive to constructive feedback
• Ability to be onsite in office 4 days week, where applicable
