Job summary

Harper, an AI-native commercial insurer, seeks a Senior Commercial Underwriter to define how risk is judged, how intake questions and rules are shaped, and how the system can apply scalable underwriting judgment across thousands of submissions. You will refine frameworks, explain decisions, and audit system outputs with engineering and product partners.

You will work on-site in New York or San Francisco, with compensation that includes base salary, bonus, and equity, and you will mentor teams on

Qualifications

• 4+ years of commercial underwriting with specialty or E&S exposure.
• Experience handling messy risks and imperfect submissions (MGA/MGU or similar).
• Breadth across commercial lines: GL, property, workers' comp, commercial auto, excess/umbrella, E&O, contractors, restaurants, etc.
• Ability to explain decisions with factors and thresholds and separate folklore from evidence.
• Ability to express underwriting judgment as source-backed rules and examples.
• Interest in AI as leverage and collaboration with product/engineering.
• Insurance licenses or credentials (Harper pays for training).

Responsibilities

• Review live risk with depth and catch missing context.
• Build underwriting frameworks: exposures, controls, loss history, structure.
• Set routing constraints with source and rationale.
• Encode judgment into the product with intake questions and rules.
• Explain carrier fit and markets for different risk shapes.
• Audit system decisions for fidelity to sources and standards.
• Teach the reasoning to teams and tie quotes/declines to the framework.
