Job summary

Harper, an AI-native commercial insurance company, is hiring a Senior Commercial Underwriter, Underwriting Intelligence, to design scalable risk frameworks and the routing rules that power them. You own the risk judgment, define appetite rules, escalation conditions, and the source evidence behind each decision, and work with product and engineering to encode this into intake questions and checks.

This on-site role is based in New York or San Francisco, with long days and high standards, aimed

Qualifications

• 4+ years of commercial underwriting with specialty or E&S exposure.
• Experience handling messy risks and imperfect submissions (MGA/MGU etc).
• Ability to explain decisions with sources and thresholds.
• Licensing required or willingness to obtain (company pays).

Responsibilities

• Define risk frameworks, routing constraints, appetite rules.
• Encode judgment into product with intake questions and escalation conditions.
• Explain carrier fit and evidence behind risk types.
• Audit system decisions against source records and underwriting standards.
• Coach teams on underwriting reasoning and tie quotes/declines to the framework.
