Job summary

Berkley Mid-Atlantic Group (BMAG) is seeking a Senior Underwriter to build and maintain relationships with independent agents, drive premium growth, and maximize renewal retention. The role requires evaluating risks, pricing, and using underwriting tools to ensure appropriate coverage within our footprint.

Responsibilities include strengthening agent partnerships, achieving new business and renewal targets, and ensuring proper reporting.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree preferred.
  • 4+ years of experience working as an Underwriter in Commercial Property & Casualty.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining positive relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, including listening for solutions.
  • Willingness to collaborate with colleagues and influence others.
  • Analytical thinking for business problems; propose solutions.
  • High energy self-starter with resilience and entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Basic knowledge of Word, Excel and Email in Windows environment.
  • Prior experience with on-line underwriting tools (e.g. Silver Plume, Reference Connect).
  • Advanced insurance coursework (CPCU/AU) or related classes preferred.

Responsibilities

The Senior Underwriter builds dynamic relationships, maintains a strong distribution channel, drives written premium growth, and maximizes renewal retention while delivering a high degree of customer satisfaction within our footprint of Independent Agencies.

Key Functions Will Include But Are Not Limited To
  • Strengthens relationships and educates agents within agency plans to maximize opportunities and achieve profitable growth.
  • Achieves new business premium, renewal premium retention and rate change objectives
  • Within company guidelines and granted underwriting authority, evaluates new and renewal information to determines risk acceptability terms/conditions to be quoted, and priced.
  • Utilizes various underwriting tools to: determine acceptable risk characteristics; determine accurate exposure classifications; set adequate property limits to accomplish appropriate insurance to value and review and quote business for assigned agents
  • Orders and reviews inspections to confirm accounts written are consistent with preliminary underwriting information and act when the inspection reveals unacceptable risk characteristics.
  • Determines if facultative reinsurance is needed and if so, factors reinsurance cost in gross pricing, completes cession procedures; documents file and follows established workflow procedure to ensure proper reporting / accounting.
Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree preferred
  • 4+ years of experience working as an Underwriter in Commercial Property & Casualty. May consider 2+ years’ experience for an Underwriter level.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining positive relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, including listening for solutions.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to collaborate with colleagues and present in a way that influences others.,
  • An ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions.
  • High energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Ability to sell and influence others.
  • Goal-oriented achiever who delivers results.
  • Basic knowledge of computer program in a windows environment, including Word, Excel and Email is mandatory.
  • Prior experience working with on-line underwriting tools is preferred (e.g. Silver Plume, and Reference Connect).
  • Advanced professional insurance coursework (i.e. CPCU or AU) or completion of other insurance related classes is preferred.

  • Base Salary Range: $95,000 - $120,000
