Job summary

AeroVironment is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to design, analyze, and test tools, engines, machines and subsystems for next-generation UAV systems. This individual will be part of a design team focused on development from concept to detailed design and testing of systems.

Responsibilities include building manufacturing drawings and BOMs, supporting design reviews, and guiding engineers. Hands-on prototyping experience and knowledge of ASME standards and SolidWorks are required.

Qualifications

• 5-8 years of experience designing complex mechanical systems with demonstrated transition to hardware.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering is required or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Experience in designing machined parts, simple composite parts, plastic injection molded parts, sheet metal parts, wire assemblies, mechanical assemblies
• Hands-on building/prototyping experience for lightweight miniature robotic systems or similar
• Experience designing electro-mechanical systems with thermodynamic constraints
• Demonstrated competence in mechanical engineering process and design/analysis tools
• Proven experience in creating engineering drawings in compliance with ASME Y14.100, Y14.5 and related standards. Proficient in SolidWorks and MS Office

Responsibilities

• Designs structural components, electro-mechanical design, payload mechanical design, ground equipment mechanical design, launching systems, flight control actuators integration, thermal analysis, prototype hardware development, tooling and fixtures design
• Reads and interprets blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and reports; assists project managers with planning and scheduling engineering work
• Confers with engineers to implement operating procedures, resolve malfunctions, provide technical information
• Develop manufacturing drawings and BOMs for components and assemblies using industry drafting standards
• Researches design proposals to evaluate feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements
• Support design reviews, assist PMs with planning/scheduling, and support manufacturing & suppliers
• Resolves issues creatively and completes tasks within schedule and budget
• Demonstrates understanding of specialization and can re-engineer to propose alternatives
• Works on problems of diverse scope and provides guidance to lower-level engineers and others
