Job summary

The Iowa Department of Transportation’s District 2 Office seeks a Traffic Tech (Engineer Technician Senior) to support traffic engineering projects in Mason City, IA. The role involves technical support for operations, data collection, and safety analyses to improve roadway performance.

Responsibilities include conducting studies, analyzing crash data, preparing recommendations, reviewing traffic control plans, and coordinating sign replacements in compliance with MUTCD and DOT standards.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in civil engineering or a related field, and experience equal to five years in engineering survey, construction inspection, highway design, materials inspection, or materials testing.
• Seven years of education and/or full-time experience as described above, where 30 semester hours equals one year of experience.
• Current continuous state executive branch experience with twelve months as a Construction Technician Senior or Design Technician Specialist, or four years as a Construction Technician, Highway Technician Senior, Engineering Operations Technician, or Design Technician.

Responsibilities

• Conduct traffic engineering studies related to speed, sight distance, and intersection or segment crash analysis.
• Collect and analyze traffic history, crash data, and other safety-related data.
• Prepare reports and recommendations to improve roadway safety and traffic operations.
• Conduct field reviews to identify highway signs and traffic control devices for compliance with MUTCD and Iowa DOT standards.
• Respond to public, city, county, and consultant inquiries regarding traffic and safety concerns.
• Prepare or review traffic control plans, work zone traffic operations, and detour routes for construction and maintenance projects.
• Assist maintenance staff to review pavement markings and roadway traffic control features to ensure compliance with established standards.
