Job summary

City of Houston seeks a Senior Assistant Director to lead the Traffic Operations branch within Houston Public Works. You will provide executive leadership for traffic signal operations, ITS, and related systems, ensuring a safe, efficient, and resilient transportation network for residents and visitors.

You will guide multi-disciplinary teams, set performance metrics, and drive modernization efforts while coordinating with TxDOT, METRO, and regional partners to improve mobility and safety

Qualifications

• Requires a formal 4-year degree from a college or university and professional certification/licensing.
• Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

• Directs the operation and maintenance of traffic signals and related systems.
• Establishes performance metrics, standards, and service level targets for traffic systems.
• Leads long-term planning for modernization of traffic control infrastructure and ITS expansion.
• Champions adoption of innovative transportation solutions for traffic systems.
• Oversees signal timing, re-timing, adaptive systems, and corridor optimization.
• Develops citywide traffic operations strategies aligned with mobility and safety goals.
• Implements congestion management, event planning, and emergency operations.
• Collaborates with TxDOT, METRO, Harris County, and partner agencies.
• Supports public outreach and communicates traffic impacts.
