Job summary

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (OTS) seeks a Sr. Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Solid Rocket Motor Engineering Team in Huntsville, AL.

You will conduct detailed thermal analysis of solid rocket motor components and collaborate closely with cross-disciplinary teams to drive technical excellence. This full-time role with a 9/80 schedule can be remote or at our Huntsville, AL facility.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree and 10-12 years' experience.
• Engineering degree required.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

• Applies engineering techniques to design, install, modify, analyze, repair and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanically functioning equipment.
• Reads and interprets blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
• Confers with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information.
• Researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
• Specifies system components or directs modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
• Investigates equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to maintenance crew.
• Perform detailed thermal analysis of solid rocket motor components.
• Size internal insulation, external thermal protection systems, and structural insulators.
• Validate models with test data; develop predictive ablation and erosion models.
• Define sub-scale tests for characterizing material properties of insulators and ablators.
• Evaluate and recommend ablative materials and thermal protection system solutions for applications in solid rocket motors
• Create reports and presentations documenting analysis and other supporting work.
• Present to peers and customers in design reviews.
