Job summary

WVUH West Virginia University Hospitals in Morgantown, WV, seeks a Medical Technologist to perform and analyze basic and advanced laboratory tests within licensed scope, ensuring accuracy and quality. You will review results, follow SOPs, and support new test development while maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines.

Required BS in Medical Technology or related field with state licensure; 2 years MT experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or related field as required.
• Current licensure as required by the state where services are provided.
• ASCP/AMT certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Process and analyze basic and advanced samples in a timely and accurate manner.
• Develop and follow SOPs to ensure reproducible results.
• Assist in development, evaluation, and implementation of new test procedures.
• Restock reagents and manage inventory to support testing.
• Perform quality control on reagents and equipment to ensure reliable results.
• Set up, run, and maintain laboratory instruments per policy.
• Act on quality control findings and follow infection control procedures.
• Perform phlebotomy as needed.
• Complete forms and report findings to nurses/physicians.
• Collaborate with healthcare staff to interpret results and solve problems.
• Conduct routine and advanced testing in designated areas.
• Recognize testing inconsistencies and take corrective action.
• Maintain accurate patent and specimen records.
• Follow safety, security, and infection control guidelines.
• Communicate with patients, families, staff, and physicians professionally.

Job description

Perform and analyze basic and advanced clinical laboratory tests within scope of licensure in a specific laboratory discipline by standard operating policies and procedures. Is the subject matter expert in specific laboratory discipline. Understand method principles, perform quality control, perform preventative maintenance, review, and analyze results as to accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology/Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Science OR Bachelor’s degree in a chemical or biological science with one year of clinical lab training/experience, or 30 or more years of previous experience concurrent with CLIA grandfathered exception.

2. Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided:

MD : No State License Required

OH : No State License Required

PA: No State License Required

WV: High Complexity Testing Personnel (HCTP) License issued by the WV Department of Health

PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).

EXPERIENCE:

1. Two (2) years of experience as a Medical Technologist.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Process and analyze basic and advanced samples, in a timely and orderly fashion, and meet usual and customary levels of productivity, while following procedures for accurate identification.

2. Provide input into the development of standard operating policies and procedures (SOP) and follow those procedures to produce accurate reproducible results

3. Assist in the scanning, development, evaluation, and implementation of new test procedures.

4. Assure an adequate supply of reagents, solutions and/or therapeutic products by restocking and assisting with inventory to complete necessary testing/requests according to the standard operating policies and procedures

5. Perform and reviews required quality control procedures on a predetermined schedule to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/ instrumentation to assure timely accurate reproducible test results insuring quality patient care

6. Set up, run, maintain, and adjust laboratory instruments accordingly to policies and procedures

7. Take appropriate action for quality control in all technical areas and follow infection control procedures for all job-related functions.

8. Perform phlebotomy procedures on patients as needed.

9. Complete forms and reports findings to nurses and/or physicians.

10. Interact with other healthcare workers to solve problems and interpret patient lab results within the framework of medical technology.

11. Perform routine and advanced laboratory testing within a designated area in the clinical laboratory.

12. Recognize testing inconsistency and take appropriate corrective action.

13. Maintain all patent and specimen records accurately, neatly, and legibly.

14. Follow hospital, state, and federal guidelines for ensuring a safe environment for workers, patients, and public.

15. Maintain compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures for safety, security, and infection control.

16. Communicate and interact with patients, families, visitors, physicians, departmental and hospital staff, and the public in general, in a manner that demonstrates professionalism and concern for their individual needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment.

2. May sit for extended period of time.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
