Job summary

PVH Potomac Valley Hospital is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist to perform and analyze clinical tests across disciplines in a high-volume lab. You will ensure accuracy, QC, and instrument maintenance while following policies and safety rules.

The ideal candidate has WV licensure (HCTP or trainee), ASCP/AMT MT/MLT certification, and prior MT experience, with strong teamwork and communication skills to support patient care.

Qualifications

• Experience as a Medical Technologist.
• Licensure: WV High Complexity Testing Personnel (HCTP) License OR Trainee License.
• Certification as MT/MLT (ASCP or AMT).

Responsibilities

• Process and analyze samples accurately and meet productivity targets.
• Set up, run, maintain, and adjust laboratory instruments per policies.
• Perform quality control and follow infection control procedures.
• May perform quality control summaries.
• Perform phlebotomy on patients as needed.
• Complete forms and report findings to nurses or physicians.
• Interact with healthcare workers to interpret patient lab results.
• Maintain records and comply with safety guidelines.

Job description

Perform and analyze clinical laboratory tests in all laboratory disciplines by standard operating policies and procedures. Understand method principles, perform quality control, perform preventative maintenance, review, and analyze results as to accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE

• Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided:
• MD: No State License required
• OH: No State License required
• PA: No State License required
• WV: High Complexity Testing Personnel (HCTP) License OR Trainee License issued by the WV Department of Health

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE

• Certification as a Medical Technologist/ Medical Lab Scientist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).

EXPERIENCE

• Experience as a Medical Technologist.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Process and analyze samples, in a timely and orderly fashion, and meet usual and customary levels of productivity, while following procedures for accurate identification.
• Set up, run, maintain, and adjust laboratory instruments accordingly to policies and procedures.
• Take appropriate action for quality control in all technical areas and follow infection control procedures for all job-related functions.
• May perform quality control summaries.
• Perform phlebotomy procedures on patients as needed.
• Complete forms and reports findings to nurses and/or physicians.
• Interact with other healthcare workers to solve problems and interpret patient lab results within the framework of medical technology.
• Perform routine and basic laboratory testing within a designated area in the clinical laboratory.
• Recognize testing inconsistency and take appropriate corrective action.
• Maintain all patent and specimen records accurately, neatly, and legibly.
• Follow hospital, state, and federal guidelines for ensuring a safe environment for workers, patients, and public.
• Maintain compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures for safety, security, and infection control.
• Communicate and interact with patients, families, visitors, physicians, departmental and hospital staff, and the public in general, in a manner that demonstrates professionalism and concern for their individual needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment.
• May sit for extended period of time.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

• Work around strong or unpleasant odors.
• May be exposed to agents which may cause serious disease.
