Overview
Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Senior Technical Writer to join our Architecture team! This is a remote opportunity, with occasional visits to nearby offices as needed.
Our Architects work alongside you to translate vision into buildable solutions. By integrating architecture with in-house engineering expertise, we evaluate design decisions within the full project context, including regulatory requirements, site conditions, schedule, and budget. This collaborative model supports commercial, healthcare, hospitality, workplace, mixed‑use, and redevelopment projects where careful coordination and thoughtful execution matter most. Responsibilities
- Owns responsibility for overall project specifications, including supporting design and project teams.
- Develops specifications as appropriate for each project phase.
- Ensures compliance with the company’s documentation standards and procedures.
- Provides guidance to staff regarding implementation of design standards.
- Engages in onboarding, training, and mentoring of staff, and participates in internal learning and development initiatives.
- Manages complex workflows and delegates responsibilities to staff at multiple levels.
- Develops, improves, and maintains master specifications for cross‑market clients.
- Manages and follows quality control of project documents.
- Makes recommendations for updating or modifying specification software or techniques to keep tools current and enhance deliverables and efficiency.
- Supports local and regional offices in material research, selection and specification, and resolves material conflict issues throughout project phases.
- Manages technical aspects of project specification delivery.
- Owns responsibility for code and constructability issues related to project specifications.
- Owns responsibility for assembling and coordinating specification deliverables with limited oversight.
- Owns responsibility for submittal reviews, substitution requests, and information requests related to project specifications.
- Maintains and builds relationships with vendors, suppliers, and product representatives.
- Demonstrates ability to deliver appropriate guidance and constructive feedback, including facilitating difficult conversations and managing conflict.
- Collaborates and maintains relationships with all internal and external project team members, client representatives, and firm leadership.
- Implements sustainable design (LEED, LBC, CALGreen) in project specifications as required.
- Produces accurate and timely work in accordance with the project scope and timeline.
- Demonstrates understanding of contractual obligations, design intent, and the project budget.
- Demonstrates understanding of financial KPIs and adjusts approach based on desired outcomes.
- Monitors specification software licenses for staff and communicates software updates to licensed users.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture or equivalent.
- 8 years of prior architectural experience, including 5 years of architectural specification writing experience.
- Experience with the building types of the assigned market preferred.
- CSI certification such as CDT, CCS, or equivalent preferred.
- Architecture license desirable.
- LEED AP or equivalent preferred.
- Knowledge of Deltek SpecPoint and RIB SpecLink software programs.
- Advanced expertise in collaboration software such as Bluebeam and Teams.
- Experience preparing architectural project specifications for multiple medium‑to‑large‑scale projects in a fast‑paced environment.
- Previous experience coordinating construction materials with vendors and suppliers.
- Advanced expertise in the architectural design and delivery process and construction sequencing and execution.
- Demonstrates advanced expertise in collaborating with project teams to fully integrate and coordinate project specifications into construction documents.
- Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job‑related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
Compensation
$100,000 to $126,000 per year (depending on qualifications)
