Job summary

Google is seeking a Technical Program Manager in San Jose to lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects from start to finish. You will plan requirements, identify risks, manage schedules, and communicate with cross-functional partners across the company.

You will work with executives and engineers to discuss tradeoffs, drive program governance, and ensure successful delivery of high-impact initiatives leveraging your technical judgment and leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in a technical field.
  • 8 years of experience in program management.
  • Experience in technical program or project management.
  • Experience with software development and multi-team program execution.

Responsibilities

  • Implement communications standards across a portfolio of programs including executive and partner communications.
  • Establish a reliable cadence for program reviews, decision-making, prioritization, and resource stewardship with measurable improvements.
  • Lead governance to drive effective executive decision-making and manage dependencies.
  • Identify change-management opportunities that increase program velocity across multiple teams.
  • Define and manage a program portfolio that targets high business impact.

As a Technical Program Manager at Google, you’ll use your technical expertise to lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects from start to finish. You’ll work with stakeholders to plan requirements, identify risks, manage project schedules, and communicate clearly with cross‑functional partners across the company. You're equally comfortable explaining your team's analyses and recommendations to executives as you are discussing the technical tradeoffs in product development with engineers.

The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

Minimum qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in program management.
  • Experience in technical program or project management.
  • Experience with software development and managing execution of programs that span multiple engineering teams.
Preferred qualifications
  • 8 years of experience managing cross‑functional or cross‑team projects.
  • Experience with life‑cycle management in a fast‑paced software environment.
  • Ability to use technical judgment to solve software engineering challenges involving bug triage, source control, continuous integration, etc.
  • Ability to be influential on a highly integrated team of technical and non‑technical members.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and collaboration skills.
Compensation

US: $192,000 - $279,000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities
  • Implement communications standards across a portfolio of programs including executive and key partner communications.
  • Establish a reliable and visible cadence for program reviews, decision‑making, prioritization, and Resource Stewardship (effective deployment of machine and people resources) whereby improvements such as efficiency and utilization gains are measurable and the impact can be felt organization wide.
  • Lead a governance structure that drives effective executive decision‑making. Ensure governance structure effectively exposes and mitigates dependencies.
  • Seek out and identify change‑management opportunities that increase program velocity and which affect multiple teams.
  • Define and manage a program portfolio solving problems that target high business impact for the organization and product area.
