Job summary

FedWriters, Inc. seeks a Senior Technical Editor to lead the editorial team behind high-stakes federal publications.

You will oversee the entire editorial process for complex reports and documentation, mentor junior editors, and ensure every deliverable meets the highest standards of accuracy and style compliance. The position is hybrid and full-time, with occasional in-person travel to Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center or DOT HQ for meetings and coordination.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree required in English, Journalism, or a technical field.
• 10+ years of professional editing experience with supervisory and project management.
• Expert command of the GPO Style Manual and Chicago Manual of Style.
• Experience editing federal research or technical publications.
• Experience in highway or surface transportation.
• Experience mentoring junior editorial staff.

Responsibilities

• Direct the editorial process for high-visibility technical documents, research reports, manuals, and magazine content.
• Perform substantive editing, fact-checking, reference checking, and copyright compliance review.
• Supervise, mentor, and assign work to technical writers and editors, and maintain consistent quality across the team.
• Manage the full document lifecycle from outline through final print and web publication.
• Ensure strict adherence to the GPO Style Manual, Chicago Manual of Style, and agency style guides.
• Ensure all content meets Section 508 accessibility requirements.
• Implement quality control and version control processes throughout production.
