Job summary

Venesco LLC is seeking a Senior Technical Editor to serve as the editorial authority for a Federal highway research publications program based in McLean, VA, with potential duty at FHWA HQ in Washington, DC. You will own the end-to-end editorial process for high-stakes technical documents, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and adherence to standards.

Responsibilities include editorial leadership, substantive editing, and quality control, mentoring staff, and coordinating with subject matter

Qualifications

Master's degree in English, Journalism, or a technical field.
10+ years of professional editorial experience, including supervisory and project management.
Expert-level command of the U.S. Government Publishing Office Style Manual.
Experience editing complex technical documentation such as research reports or technical manuals.
Experience ensuring Section 508 accessibility in published content.

Responsibilities

Oversee the entire editorial process for high-stakes technical documentation across the program.
Direct editorial staff alongside the Project Manager—assign tasks and ensure timely, accurate completion.
Mentor junior editors and writers and build consistency of practice across the team.
Perform substantive editing, copyediting, proofreading, rephrasing, and rewriting for coherence and structure.
Verify technical accuracy of content, schematics, and data tables; ensure integration with narrative text.
Ensure documents conform to TFHRC RD&T Communication Reference Guide and the GPO Style Manual; enforce 508 compliance.
Manage copyright clearances, model release forms, and publication forms.
Own lifecycle of documents from outline to final publication, including web publishing.
