Senior Technical Designer - Technical Design & Production

Overview

Tomorrow is partnering with a global creative studio that uses art, culture and design to create permanent, site-specific experiences for leading brands and institutions.

They are looking for a Senior Technical Designer to join their New York studio, bridging creative intent and technical delivery across major US projects. The role will focus predominantly on large-scale workplace environments, alongside projects spanning public realm, healthcare and other permanent spaces.

Working from established creative concepts, you will lead the technical development of wayfinding systems, environmental graphics, bespoke artworks and spatial features from design development through fabrication and installation. This will involve creating resolved Rhino models, producing comprehensive drawing packages and ensuring every design is buildable, code-compliant and accurately documented.

This is a collaborative, technically focused position rather than a traditional concept-design role. It would particularly suit someone with an architectural or environmental-design background who wants to apply their technical expertise within a more creative, multidisciplinary studio.

What You'll Do

• Develop Rhino models from initial creative concepts through to detailed, production-ready solutions.
• Translate design intent into comprehensive drawing packages for pricing, fabrication, construction and installation.
• Produce detailed wayfinding plans, elevations, sections, plans, sign families, schedules and technical details.
• Act as the technical lead from design development through production and installation.
• Advise creative teams on feasibility, materials, dimensions, construction methods and technical parameters.
• Review designs against relevant US building codes, accessibility standards and project-specific requirements.
• Interpret architectural drawings and coordinate technical information with architects, engineers, consultants and contractors.
• Carry out site surveys, feasibility studies and architectural coordination, identifying site‑specific constraints at an early stage.
• Identify structural, regulatory, fabrication and installation risks and propose practical solutions.
• Act as the central technical point of contact throughout project delivery.
• Coordinate information between internal creative and production teams, clients, consultants, fabricators and suppliers.
• Liaise directly with vendors and support fabricator selection, costing, procurement, sampling and production approvals.
• Help expand the studio's network of trusted fabricators, suppliers and installation partners across New York and the wider East Coast.
• Review shop drawings, samples and technical submissions to ensure quality and alignment with the original design intent.
• Support quality control throughout fabrication, production and installation.
• Own drawing registers, revision management, version control and external drawing submissions.
• Maintain accurate technical records and identify documentation gaps before they develop into production or site issues.
• Attend client meetings, site visits and installations when required.
• Collaborate with the studio's UK production and technical teams during periods of increased demand.
• Help refine technical procedures and introduce greater consistency, efficiency and accountability across the studio.

What You'll Bring

• Significant experience in technical design, architecture, environmental graphics, wayfinding, commercial interiors or another relevant built-environment discipline.
• Advanced Rhino modelling skills, with the ability to develop creative concepts into technically resolved, buildable models.
• Excellent CAD skills and experience producing detailed, fabrication-ready drawing packages.
• A portfolio demonstrating comprehensive technical documentation, ideally including detailed wayfinding plans, architectural coordination and permanent built work.
• Strong experience interpreting architectural drawings and producing accurate plans, elevations, sections and construction details.
• Practical knowledge of US building regulations, accessibility requirements, codes and technical standards, particularly across East Coast projects.
• Experience working across permanent workplace environments; exposure to healthcare, public realm or institutional projects would also be valuable.
• A strong understanding of fabrication methods, materials, finishes, fixings and installation requirements.
• Experience coordinating directly with architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, fabricators and suppliers.
• Familiarity with Revit and BIM workflows.
• Strong document-control, drawing-register and revision-management experience.
• The ability to identify technical risks and develop pragmatic solutions that protect the creative vision.
• Experience supporting vendor selection, sampling, technical reviews and production approvals.
• An established network of specialist fabricators, vendors or suppliers would be advantageous.
• Strong organisational and communication skills, with close attention to detail across complex projects.
• A collaborative and supportive approach, with the confidence to advise creative teams without needing to own the primary concept-development process.
• A self-starting mindset and an interest in helping shape technical procedures within a growing US studio.
• An architecture-informed background combined with a desire to work within a more creative, art-led environment would be particularly relevant.
