Job summary

Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance Co. seeks an experienced environmental casualty claims leader to own complex matters from first notice through resolution.

You will decide coverage, set reserves, negotiate settlements, and guide strategy with internal teams and external counsel. You will drive litigation plans, assemble the right experts, mentor colleagues, and monitor evolving pollution law to adjust claims policies accordingly.

Qualifications

• 5-7 years of commercial casualty claims experience, including environmental or pollution claims handling.
• Proven ability to handle complex litigated matters independently, including coverage analysis, reserving, and settlement negotiation.
• Strong command of environmental coverage issues, such as pollution legal liability, exclusions, and related risk.
• Experience managing defense counsel and consultants.
• Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
• Experience with mass litigation and/or toxic tort required.
• Ability to obtain/maintain All-Lines Adjuster License.

Why this role

You own complex environmental casualty claims from first notice through resolution, with real authority to decide coverage, set reserves, negotiate, and settle. This is not a hand-off role. You'll make the calls, direct the strategy, and be recognized internally as a subject matter expert on pollution and specialty coverage issues.

What you'll do

Own the claim end to end. Determine coverage, investigate, assess liability, set and adjust reserves, evaluate exposure, negotiate settlements, and authorize payment. You'll also have the authority to deny claims when the facts and policy language support it.

Drive litigation strategy. Review pleadings, claim files, and investigation materials, then set the plan to resolve each suit, including coverage positions, amounts owed, discovery plans, and negotiation approach.

Build the right team for each matter. Based on the allegations, assemble the working group of Home Office Legal, defense counsel, and Home Office Claims, and bring in technical resources such as environmental consultants where needed.

Manage outside counsel. Oversee defense counsel's strategy, practices, and billing so spend stays aligned with outcomes.

Protect the claim and the data. Maintain the integrity of financial processing and the security of confidential information in claim files.

Mentor and partner. Coach colleagues and serve as the claims liaison to Underwriting, Reinsurance, and other business partners.

Stay ahead of the law. Track legislation, court decisions, and trends affecting pollution and other specialty coverages, and advise Claims Management on any impact to claims policies and procedures.

Contribute beyond your desk. Participate in special projects that shape how the team works.

Qualifications

What you bring

Required

• 5-7 years of commercial casualty claims experience, including environmental or pollution claims handling
• Proven ability to handle complex, litigated matters independently, including coverage analysis, reserving, and settlement negotiation
• Strong command of environmental coverage issues, such as pollution legal liability, CGL pollution exclusions, and third-party bodily injury and property damage from contamination
• Experience managing defense counsel and consultants
• Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills
• Advanced Environmental Claims and/or Pollution Claims experience preferred
• Experience with mass litigation and/or toxic tort required
• Ability to obtain/maintain All-Lines Adjuster License

Nice to have

• Experience with Superfund/CERCLA, remediation oversight, or environmental site claims
• Background in law, environmental science, engineering, or a related field, or a professional designation (e.g., CPCU, AIC)
• Experience handling construction defect, toxic tort, or other complex specialty lines
