Job description

Senior Data Analyst / Technical Business Analyst
Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior Data Analyst / Technical Business Analyst to join a Software Engineering team and serve as a critical bridge between business stakeholders, Product/Project leadership, and Engineering.

This individual will be responsible for translating complex business and data needs into clear, detailed technical requirements for data and software development. The role requires strong analytical skills, hands-on SQL capabilities, excellent technical documentation, and the ability to work closely with engineers throughout the software development lifecycle.

The ideal candidate is comfortable digging into data, understanding system behavior, documenting technical requirements, analyzing defects, and helping ensure development work is well-defined, healthy, and moving toward successful delivery.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Requirements & Analysis — 50%
  • Gather, analyze, and document technical requirements for data and software development initiatives.
  • Translate business requirements into detailed specifications that Software Engineers and Data Engineers can build against.
  • Develop functional and technical requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, business rules, data requirements, and process flows.
  • Define data mappings, field-level requirements, transformation rules, validation criteria, and system behaviors.
  • Use SQL queries and joins to investigate data, validate requirements, analyze issues, and support development efforts.
  • Understand relationships between data sources, applications, business processes, and downstream systems.
  • Work with stakeholders to clarify ambiguous requirements and identify gaps before development begins.
  • Ensure requirements are complete, testable, technically feasible, and clearly understood by the Engineering team.
  • Maintain documentation as requirements and solutions evolve throughout the development lifecycle.
Engineering Team Collaboration, Analysis & Defect Remediation — 30%
  • Work day-to-day as an embedded member of the Software Engineering team.
  • Collaborate directly with Software Engineers, Data Engineers, QA, Product, and other technical resources.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, planning sessions, refinement, technical discussions, and delivery activities.
  • Investigate application and data defects to determine expected versus actual behavior.
  • Perform data analysis and use SQL to assist with root-cause analysis and defect remediation.
  • Help Engineering teams reproduce issues, understand business impact, and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Validate completed development against documented requirements and acceptance criteria.
  • Support testing, troubleshooting, and issue resolution throughout the development lifecycle.
Project Owner & Delivery Partnership — 20%
  • Partner closely with the Project Owner and Delivery Lead to ensure assigned work remains healthy, properly defined, and on track.
  • Provide visibility into requirements status, dependencies, defects, risks, and potential delivery issues.
  • Identify gaps or blockers early and work with the appropriate stakeholders to resolve them.
  • Help prioritize and refine the team's backlog based on business needs, technical dependencies, and delivery objectives.
  • Ensure Engineering has the information and requirements necessary to successfully execute its work.
  • Communicate effectively across technical and non-technical teams to keep initiatives aligned.
Stakeholder Environment

This role is embedded within Software Engineering while working across both technical and business functions. Key stakeholders may include:

  • Software Engineering
  • Product / Project Owners
  • Delivery Leadership
  • Finance
  • Policy Administration
  • Quality Assurance
  • Business Operations

The successful candidate must be able to communicate comfortably with a Software Engineer in one meeting and a Finance or Policy Administration stakeholder in the next.

Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience as a Technical Business Analyst, Senior Data Analyst, Systems Analyst, or similar technical analytical role.
  • Demonstrated experience writing technical requirements for software and data development.
  • Strong SQL skills, including queries, joins, filtering, aggregation, and data validation.
  • Experience working directly with Software Engineering teams throughout the SDLC.
  • Strong understanding of data structures, relational databases, system integrations, and application workflows.
  • Experience creating:
  • Technical and functional requirements
  • Acceptance criteria
  • Business rules
  • Data requirements and mappings
  • Process and system workflows
  • Experience investigating defects and performing root-cause and data analysis.
  • Strong requirements-gathering and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to translate business needs into language that technical teams can execute against.
  • Experience working within Agile/Scrum software development environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, dependencies, and stakeholders in a fast-moving Engineering environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting financial, insurance, policy administration, or other transaction-intensive systems.
  • Experience with Jira, Azure DevOps, Confluence, or similar development-management tools.
  • Understanding of APIs, system integrations, data flows, and ETL/ELT concepts.
