Job summary

Empirical Wealth Management is seeking a Senior Tax Associate to join our tax practice in Newport Beach, CA. The role focuses on technical tax work, collaborative planning, and direct client service, with opportunities to train and mentor junior staff.

Key duties include preparing returns, tax projections, and proactive planning, while coordinating with advisors and communicating with clients by phone and email. Requires CPA/JD and 2–5 years in tax with strong research skills.

Qualifications

• 2-5 years of public accounting experience with a background in taxation.
• CPA eligible or JD required; Master's in taxation preferred
• Ability to manage multiple client engagements and projects
• Proficiency in or ability to adapt quickly to new tax software and research tools (CCH Axcess Tax, BNA Income Tax Planner, CCH IntelliConnect)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong research and analytical skills
• Willingness and desire to be part of a team

Responsibilities

• Provide initial tax preparation support, including information gathering, workpaper creation, data entry, and first-draft return preparation
• Review returns and selected projects prepared by Tax Associates and interns
• Assist in training and mentoring junior team members
• Prepare tax projections and provide proactive tax planning recommendations
• Prepare responses to IRS and state tax notices and correspondence
• Collaborate with the advisory team on tax planning matters and client service initiatives
• Communicate with clients by phone and email and participate in client meetings as needed
• Conduct tax research and provide support on technical projects and planning matters
