The City of San José is seeking a Senior Systems Applications Programmer (Sr. SAP) to develop technology solutions that maximize the delivery of City products and services.

This 100% individual contributor role focuses on on-premises and cloud environments with five days on-site each week. The ideal candidate will have strong programming skills in JavaScript, Python, SQL, HTML and CSS, with experience in APIs, Oracle databases, and Crystal Reports.

Qualifications

  • Education: Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.
  • Experience: 3 years of progressively responsible experience in computer systems applications programming.
  • Substitution: additional related work experience may substitute for up to 2 years of education.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and deploy fully tested application solutions to production.
  • Support and maintain existing applications, and train staff on new feature releases.
  • Administer Geotab GPS tracking hardware and manage the Geotab portal.
  • Provide customer support and troubleshoot technical issues for end users.
  • Identify bugs and enhancement opportunities for product release cycles.
  • Recommend new software development or third‑party solutions as appropriate.
  • Serve in an on‑call rotation as needed.
  • Author Crystal Reports.

Position Duties

The Department of Public Works is recruiting to fill one (1) full-time Senior Systems Applications Programmer (Sr. SAP) position to develop technology solutions that will maximize the delivery of City products and services.

The total salary range for Senior Systems Application Programmer (Sr. SAP) classification is $129,270.96-$157,182.48.

This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The primary focus of this Sr. SAP position is to support the development and maintenance of several in-house hybrid systems hosted across both on-premises and in cloud environments. This is a 100% individual contributor role responsible for developing solutions, resolving technical challenges, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to support departmental and citywide operations, ensuring seamless integration across enterprise applications. This position requires five days on-site each week.

Duties include but are not limited to
  • Develop, test, and deploy fully tested application solutions to production
  • Support and maintain existing applications, and train staff on new feature releases
  • Administer Geotab GPS tracking hardware and managing the Geotab portal
  • Provide customer support, troubleshooting and resolving technical issues for end users
  • Identify bugs and enhancement opportunities for inclusion in the product release cycle
  • Recommend new software development or third‑party solutions as appropriate
  • Serve in an on‑call rotation as needed

Highly Desirable Qualifications
  • Strong programming skills in JavaScript, Python, SQL, HTML, and CSS
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases such as Oracle, including development of complex queries
  • Solid understanding of front‑end and back‑end application architecture, with the ability to troubleshoot and debug efficiently across the stack
  • Experience designing, developing, and consuming APIs, with working knowledge of HTTP protocols, authentication methods
  • Experience with AssetWorks or a comparable enterprise asset management platform, and the ability to quickly learn and apply advanced features with minimal training
  • Strong technical documentation skills and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non‑technical audiences
Minimum Qualifications

Education: A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Public Administration, Computer Technology, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Statistics or a closely related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly progressive experience in computer systems applications programming.

Acceptable Substitution: Additional years of directly related work experience may be substituted for up to a maximum of two (2) years of the educational requirement on a year‑for‑year basis.

Background Investigation Process: Eligible candidates will complete a Class C Background packet. Upon successful completion and review of the background investigation, the hiring board will make their employment selections. Those selected will move forward in the hiring process.
