Job summary

UNC Health Care is seeking a Surgical Technologist II for the Johnston Health operating room in Smithfield, NC. This per diem role supports intraoperative care across diverse service lines and collaborates with surgeons and registered nurses to ensure patient safety.

You will maintain sterile technique, assist in instrument handling, and participate in case setup and planning. A strong mentor attitude and excellent communication are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy this requirement.
• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program; or Military Training in Surgical Tech; or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Performs all duties of Level I plus advanced intraoperative responsibilities.
• Provide sterile technique, instrument handling, and aseptic practices.
• Assist in instrument setup, case planning, and draping for procedures.
• Maintain sterile field and monitor supplies throughout cases.
• Assist in identification, preparation and labeling of specimens.
• Support surgeon and RN during intraoperative phases.
• Operate complex equipment and troubleshoot as needed.
• Participate in case selection and instrument needs planning.
• Report discrepancies and ensure correct counts of instruments and supplies.
• Mentor new hires, trainees, and peers during orientation and reviews.
• Contribute to data collection for research when requested.
• Respond to emergencies in the OR per hospital plans.
