Job summary

Idaho Society of Professional Engineers in Springfield, Oregon is seeking a Senior Substation Design Engineer to lead the design of customer-owned substations for industrial and power-generation clients. The role is full-time and involves end-to-end design from layout to construction support.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years in substation design, PE licensing, and strong knowledge of HV equipment, protection, and SCADA integration.

Qualifications

• B.S.E.E. with emphasis in electrical power systems from an accredited program.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (Electrical).
• At least ten years of practical, senior-level electrical engineering experience, mostly in substation design.
• Proven substation physical design experience: layout, bus, clearances.
• Grounding grid design and analysis including step/touch potential.
• Knowledge of high-voltage equipment and switchgear.
• Protection/controls design including relay coordination and S/C studies.
• Experience with 230 kV transmission/distribution, and related standards.
• Familiarity with IEC 61850, DNP3 or similar protocols.
• Proficiency with CADD/BIM, power system studies and Excel.
• Strong written and verbal communication, leadership, and project management.

Responsibilities

• Serve as lead engineer for substation design projects from concept to issued-for-construction drawings.
• Develop substation layouts, equipment arrangement and grounding plans.
• Perform grounding grid design, step/touch potential analysis and lightning protection.
• Specify HV equipment including transformers, GSUs, breakers and switchgear.
• Design protection and control packages with relay coordination and schematics.
• Coordinate with civil/SCADA teams and utility requirements.
• Prepare calculations, sketches and final working drawings.
• Provide technical support during construction, commissioning and energization.
• Mentor junior engineers and staff.
