Job summary

R.T. Patterson Company is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to design and implement heavy industrial facility equipment and structural foundations from our Pittsburgh, PA office.

The role requires a PE license and extensive civil/structural engineering experience across foundations, piles, mill buildings, platforms, and pipe racks. You will lead projects, coordinate multi-disciplinary teams, and ensure compliance with AISC/ACI/ASCE/IBC standards while mentoring junior staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 7–9 years of experience; OR Master’s degree in Engineering with 5+ years of experience; OR PhD in Engineering with 2+ years of experience
• PE license is required
• Knowledge of AISC, ACI, ASCE, IBC, Mill Building standards
• Proficient in design and calculation software – STAAD Pro and/or RISA 3D
• Experience with civil/structural Excel spreadsheets and MathCAD is preferred
• AutoCAD experience; Advanced Steel knowledge is a plus

RT Patterson is looking for an experienced Structural Engineer, based out of our Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office, to design and implement heavy industrial facility (new and existing) equipment and structural foundations, piles, mill buildings, structures/platforms, and pipe racks/supports. To do well in this role you must be a licensed professional engineer and have extensive experience as a Civil/Structural Engineer, conforming to the following responsibilities and requirements.

Job Responsibilities:

Engineering Design & Technical Leadership

• Lead the design and execution of complex projects, systems, or processes
• Prepare and review complete plans, specifications, and technical documentation
• Oversee investigations, fieldwork, and data analysis to support engineering solutions
• Apply advanced engineering techniques, theories, and processes to deliver high-quality outcomes
• Ensure technical accuracy, quality, and compliance across all project deliverables
• Lead and drive project outcomes with a high degree of autonomy
• Manage project scope, schedules, and deliverables across complex assignments
• Contribute to project budgeting, including labor, material, and construction cost estimates
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams to ensure alignment and successful execution
• Support strategic planning and execution of engineering initiatives

Problem Solving & Decision Making

• Address advanced and complex engineering challenges with minimal oversight
• Evaluate and implement innovative solutions and approaches
• Seek guidance from Senior Engineers or Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) on highly complex or specialized issues
• Serve as a technical resource to Engineer I and II team members
• Coordinate and support the work of junior staff across projects
• Provide mentorship, guidance, and knowledge sharing to support team development
• Contribute to building a strong, collaborative engineering team

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

• Communicate effectively with internal teams, clients, and senior leadership
• Participate in and lead project meetings, presenting technical solutions and updates
• Regularly interact with senior management on project status and strategic initiatives

Health, Safety & Compliance

• Follow all health and safety requirements, including OSHA standards for fieldwork
• Ensure compliance with engineering standards, regulations, and ethical practices

Qualifications:
