Job summary

Upbound Group in Plano, TX seeks a Manager of State Tax Planning and Cont controversy to lead state and local tax planning and audit defense. You will partner with business leaders to reduce tax risk while enabling growth across trusted brands like Acima, Brigit, and Rent-A-Center.

The role requires a CPA or tax degree, 8 years of corporate tax/public accounting experience (5 in state tax), and strong analytical and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Tax/Accounting or CPA
• 8 years of corporate tax and/or public accounting experience, including 5 years of recent state tax experience
• Excellent analytical skills; detail oriented
• Ability to develop and motivate team members
• Experience with OneSource is preferred but not required. Proficient in Excel and Word

Responsibilities

• Advise management on the state and local tax consequences of transactions and possible tax planning opportunities.
• Advise management on the impact of new tax laws, court decisions, regulations, rulings and proposed legislation and recommend tax planning alternatives.
• Support mergers and acquisitions, including, but not limited to direct and indirect tax exposure analyses, remediation, and integration.
• Manage state and local tax audits and all Voluntary Disclosure Agreements.
• Oversee relationships with third party law firms in the event of tax litigation.
• Identify, develop, coordinate, and implement state and local tax planning opportunities.
• Provide tax support to the business including assistance with transfer pricing between legal entities.
• Assist and advise management regarding tax reserves.
• Assist in the management of state and local direct tax functions, including compliance and reporting, serving as a technical resource.
• Oversee the building of comprehensive processes, ensuring timely, accurate and well documented deliverables.
• Assist in management of any federal tax audits.
• Assist in certain aspects of federal tax compliance including R&D documentation.
• Support the negotiation and resolution of audit issues; reach the most favorable settlements possible in terms of assessment and professional fees
