Job summary

Ursa Major in Colorado is hiring Staff Design Engineers to own solid rocket motor cases from concept through qualification and production. You will define structures, lead design trades, run test campaigns, review data, and collaborate across analysis, manufacturing, test, and supply chain.

This hands-on role requires on-the-floor work, mentoring juniors, maintaining documentation, and delivering robust designs that meet schedule and performance targets.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering.
• 7+ years in rocket motors or solid propulsion.
• Ability to design clean-sheet motor cases and perform initial structural analyses.
• Proficient with CAD and engineering analysis tools.
• Strong fundamentals in structural mechanics and materials.
• Excellent written and verbal communication for cross-functional teams.
• U.S. DoD Secret Clearance eligibility is required.

Responsibilities

• Own design of composite or metallic rocket motor cases and interfaces.
• Translate requirements into manufacturable structural designs that meet targets.
• Lead design trades across materials, layup architectures, processes, and configurations.
• Develop and execute test campaigns from coupon to full-scale testing.
• Review test data and drive design or process changes.
• Provide hands-on support for hardware assembly and test.
• Lead cross-functional collaboration with analysis, manufacturing, test, systems, and supply chain.
• Establish aggressive development schedules and mitigate risks.
• Generate CAD models and drawings per ASME Y14.5 standards.
• Maintain rigorous technical documentation.
• Mentor less-senior engineers.
• Codify best practices with standards, guidelines, checklists.
