Job summary

System One in Washington, DC is seeking a Senior SQL Database Platform Engineer to deliver on-premises SQL Server and PostgreSQL administration as automated, FISMA-compliant code for a federal contract. This role requires U.S.

citizenship and the ability to obtain Public Trust clearance, with 100% onsite work. You will design CI/CD pipelines in GitLab, build IaC with PowerShell and Ansible, automate backups and health checks, and implement security controls.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement CI/CD pipelines in GitLab for database server builds, upgrades, patching, and configuration changes across SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (PowerShell, Ansible) to provision and enforce desired state for on-premises database servers.
• Develop PowerShell scripts and T-SQL stored procedures to automate routine tasks.
• Automate routine maintenance — backups, health checks, patch cycles, drift remediation.
• Embed security and compliance in the pipeline: vulnerability scanning, hardening, and FISMA control evidence for PostgreSQL ATO.
• Documentation, runbooks, and knowledge transfer.
• Database Administration & Operations: install, configure, upgrade, and maintain SQL Server instances; manage backups, DR; monitor performance; perform maintenance; manage security; emphasize performance tuning.

Position Requirements:

Provide a senior engineer to deliver database server administration for the Board's on-premises SQL Server and PostgreSQL environments as automated, FISMA-compliant code — supporting the PostgreSQL ATO, cloud-readiness, and platform modernization.

Tasks:

• Design and implement CI/CD pipelines in GitLab for database server and instance builds, version upgrades, patching, cumulative updates, and configuration changes across SQL Server and PostgreSQL server enterprise service offerings.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (Powershell, Ansible playbooks/roles executed via AAP; IaC modules) to provision, configure, and enforce desired state for on-premises database servers.
• Develop PowerShell scripts and T-SQL stored procedures to automate routine tasks
• Automate routine maintenance — backups, health checks, patch cycles, drift remediation.
• Embed security and compliance in the pipeline: vulnerability scanning, hardening, and FISMA control evidence supporting the PostgreSQL ATO.
• Documentation, runbooks, and knowledge transfer.
• Database Administration & Operations:
  • Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain SQL Server instances (2019/2022/2025) across development, test, and production environments
  • Manage database backups, restores, and disaster recovery procedures
  • Monitor database performance, capacity, and availability using native tools and third-party monitoring solutions
  • Perform routine maintenance: index optimization, statistics updates, integrity checks (DBCC CHECKDB)
  • Manage database security: user accounts, roles, permissions, encryption (TDE/Always Encrypted)
  • Strong experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization.
