SENIOR SQL DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR - US FLEXIBLE
Purpose of Position

The Senior SQL Database Administrator is responsible for the management, performance, and availability of SQL Server databases within the organization. This role involves overseeing database installation, configuration, optimization, troubleshooting, backup, and recovery, as well as partnering with IT security to ensure security and compliance requirements are defined and met. The Senior DBA will work closely with development teams, IT infrastructure teams, and business constituencies for planning changes related to upgrades or new requirements.

Essential Functions:

  • Database Management:
    • Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server databases across multiple environments including in Msoft Azure cloud SQL services.
    • Design and implement database schemas, tables, indexes, and views based on application requirements and specifically with Infor Syteline 9/10.
    • Monitor database performance and implement tuning techniques to ensure high availability and optimal performance while leveraging 3rd party tools to automate many repeating tasks.
    • Develop and maintain disaster recovery and backup strategies to ensure data integrity and availability.
    • Manage SQL Server instances, including ensuring proper configuration and compliance with security policies.
  • Performance Tuning & Optimization:
    • Proactively monitor and optimize database performance (CPU, memory, disk, and query optimization).
    • Review execution plans and query performance, recommending indexing, partitioning, and other optimization techniques.
    • Analyze and address SQL Server performance bottlenecks, ensuring consistent and high-performance database environments.
  • Backup & Recovery:
    • Design and maintain backup strategies for all SQL databases.
    • Perform regular backups and test restoration procedures.
    • Implement high-availability solutions such as Always On Availability Groups, clustering, or replication.
    • Ensure business continuity with disaster recovery plans and periodic testing.
  • Security & Compliance:
    • Implement database security practices, ensuring user permissions are properly managed.
    • Monitor and enforce compliance with data protection policies, auditing, and industry standards.
    • Work closely with the security team to prevent unauthorized access and database breaches. Collaborate as necessary to identify, respond, and remediate vulnerabilities.
  • Capacity Planning & Scaling:
    • Perform database capacity planning and manage resource allocation.
    • Scale databases to meet business growth needs, ensuring future scalability with minimal downtime.
    • Optimize storage usage, balancing between on-premises and cloud environments.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve database-related issues, including performance degradation, locking/blocking, and system failures.
  • Provide on-call support as necessary for critical issues.
  • Work closely with development teams to support application deployments, new features, and database migrations.
  • Provide expertise on SQL coding best practices, query optimization, and database design principles.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation for database architecture, configurations, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting guidelines.
  • Provide leadership in complex database projects, ensuring deadlines are met and quality standards are upheld.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience as a SQL Database Administrator, with 3+ years in a senior or lead role.
  • Expertise in SQL Server, including SQL Server 2012 or newer, with deep knowledge of database architecture, design, and optimization.
  • Strong understanding of performance tuning techniques, indexing, and query optimization.
  • Experience with high-availability solutions (Always On Availability Groups, SQL Server Clustering, Database Mirroring, etc.).
  • Proficient in database security, backup, and recovery techniques.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) for database management and deployment.
  • Experience with automation tools (PowerShell, SQLCMD, etc.) for routine maintenance tasks. Knowledge and experience with 3rd party tools is highly desired.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

Preferred:

  • Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Microsoft Certified: SQL Server Database Administrator.
  • Experience with Infor Syteline as an ERP platform is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases or other RDBMS like PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle.
  • Experience with database migrations and upgrades.
