Job summary

CSA Group is seeking a seasoned Special Inspector to perform field inspections and ensure compliance with NYC Building Code across multiple project sites in New York. The role requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least 10 years of hands-on inspection experience in masonry, concrete, rebar, bolting, and welding.

Certification with ACI, ICC, and CWI is required; PE is a plus. Strong reporting and coordination skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of onsite special inspections experience (Masonry, Concrete, Rebar, Bolting, Welding).
• Certifications: ACI, ICC, CWI required; PE preferred.
• Proficiency with MS Office and reporting systems such as Procore.
• Strong knowledge of NYC Building Code and DOB requirements.
• Ability to interpret drawings and project documents.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; report writing.
• Ability to manage multiple inspections and meet schedules.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

• Perform special inspections and field observations in accordance with NYC Building Code requirements, approved construction documents, project specifications, and applicable industry standards.
• Verify that construction activities comply with approved plans, specifications, shop drawings, and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct inspections of structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, fireproofing, mechanical systems, energy code compliance, and other assigned disciplines based on qualifications and certifications.
• Document inspection activities, observations, test results, and deficiencies in clear, accurate, and timely inspection reports.
• Identify non-conforming work, issue deficiency reports when required, and verify corrective actions through follow-up inspections.
• Review construction drawings, specifications, approved RFIs, submittals, and related project documentation before and during inspections.
• Coordinate with contractors, project managers, design professionals, testing laboratories, and client representatives to ensure inspection requirements are met.
• Maintain complete and accurate inspection records in accordance with company Quality Management System (QMS), agency procedures, and project requirements.
• Adhere to all company safety policies and site-specific safety requirements, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Support project scheduling requirements by responding to inspection requests and maintaining flexibility to perform inspections across multiple project site.

Requirements

Essential Skills and Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
• 10 years of experience as a minimum of related work experience performing special inspections onsite (Masonry, Concrete, Rebar, Bolting and Welding).
• ACI, ICC, CWI are required. PE is preferrable.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), electronic reporting systems, and construction management platforms such as Procore or similar applications.
• Strong knowledge of NYC Building Code, applicable industry standards, and Special Inspection requirements.
• Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, approved RFIs, and project documents.
• Experience performing special inspections in accordance with NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) requirements and TR-1 responsibilities.
• Current ICC Special Inspector certifications applicable to assigned inspection disciplines (Structural Steel and Bolting, Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Fireproofing, Mechanical, Energy Code, etc.).
• Ability to accurately document inspection results, prepare detailed field reports, and identify deficiencies requiring corrective action.
• Knowledge of quality management systems, inspection procedures, and documentation requirements.
• Strong understanding of construction means and methods, materials, testing procedures, and workmanship standards.
• Ability to independently evaluate code compliance and communicate findings to contractors, clients, and project stakeholders.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise and professional inspection reports.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple inspection assignments while meeting project schedules.
