Job summary

Umbra is seeking an experienced RF Microwave Design Engineer to lead end‑to‑end design, analysis, and optimization of high‑performance RF components for spaceborne systems. You will design antennas, OMTs, and waveguide devices, with emphasis on isolation, loss, and broadband performance, for on‑site work in Reston, VA.

The role requires a strong foundation in antenna and waveguide theory, 3D EM simulations, and hands‑on RF measurements, with eligibility for U.S.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 5–8+ years of RF/microwave engineering experience.
• Strong antenna, waveguide theory foundation.

Responsibilities

• Design and analyze antennas and feed systems (horns, waveguides, polarization).
• Develop and validate orthomode transducers with high isolation and broadband performance.
• Create waveguide components: transitions, bends, twists, couplers, filters, power dividers, circulators.
• Perform passive RF and antenna analysis: impedance matching, isolation, and loss.
• Run full‑wave EM simulations for passive/antenna structures using 3D tools.
• Conduct tolerance, thermal, and mechanical sensitivity analyses for precision hardware.
• Support fabrication, inspection, and RF testing of passive components and antenna assemblies.
• Measure S‑parameters, isolation, return loss, and radiation characteristics.
• Collaborate with mechanical and systems teams to ensure RF performance and manufacturability.
• Prepare detailed design docs, drawings, and test/verifications.
