Job summary

Vast seeks a Design Reliability Engineer to lead and shape the reliability and design reviews for artificial-gravity space habitats. The role reports to the Director of Design Reliability and is based in Long Beach, CA, full-time, exempt.

The candidate will oversee test campaigns, ensure design integrity, and drive engineering standards across the organization while partnering with software and configuration teams to keep data organized and accessible.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
• 7+ years in responsible engineering, design ownership, or reliability-focused development.
• Experience conducting design/qualification reviews or major change assessments.
• Strong communicator with high emotional intelligence and ability to influence.
• Resilient, curious, and fast learner in high-pressure environments.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical reviews shaping the design of artificial-gravity space habitats and guide milestone reviews and risk gates.
• Oversee qualification and test completeness for flight systems and ensure robust campaigns.
• Identify risks in test campaigns and help teams converge on safe, reliable solutions.
• Guard and evolve Vast’s engineering standards, design guides, and review frameworks for rapid yet confident decisions.
• Capture lessons learned and strengthen future design guidance across projects.
• Build and refine design review templates, reliability checklists, and internal design guides.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to improve reliability and ensure changes are intentional and well-documented.
