Job summary

The City of Lansing is seeking a full-time Senior Solid Waste Public Works Supervisor to plan, coordinate, and supervise daily activities of solid waste and recycling collection. This role supports the Public Service Department and offers an opportunity to advance a career serving Lansing residents.

Ideal candidates will have on-call availability, potential overtime/weekend work for emergencies, and a valid Michigan driver’s license.

Qualifications

• On-call as scheduled during non-normal working hours.
• May require overtime or weekend work for emergencies.
• Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Assist in supervising solid waste collection systems including recycling, composting, yard waste, refuse, or bulk item pickup.
• Supervise employees: assign work, discipline, evaluation, training, approve leave, schedule routes, manage overtime per bargaining contracts.
• Determine work requirements using technical plans, city policies, specifications, and response timelines.
• Contribute to annual work plan and forecast personnel, equipment, technology, and capital needs.
• Mentor, train, counsel, motivate, evaluate, and discipline subordinates.
• Ensure safety rules are followed and activities comply with laws and city policies.
