Job summary

City of Lansing seeks a full-time Senior Solid Waste Public Works Supervisor to plan, coordinate, and supervise daily solid waste and recycling collection within the Public Service Department.

The role includes supervising staff, assigning work, ensuring safety, and helping develop budgets and capital improvements for infrastructure. On-call and weekend work may be required; a Michigan driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

• Supervise and coordinate waste collection operations, including recycling and bulk item pickup.
• Direct staff: assignments, discipline, evaluations, training, overtime, routes, and scheduling.
• Support annual work plans, budgeting, and capital improvements for infrastructure.
• Ensure compliance with safety rules and all applicable laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Assist in supervising the City’s solid waste collection systems, including recycling, composting, yard waste, refuse, or bulk item pickup.
• Supervise employees: assign work, discipline, evaluate, train, approve leave, schedule overtime per contracts, schedule routes.
• Determine work requirements using technical plans, City policies, and material specs with target response times.
• Develop annual work plans for budget operations and forecast personnel/equipment needs.
• Mentor, train, counsel, motivate, evaluate, and discipline subordinates.
• Ensure crews follow safety rules and comply with policies and laws.
• Participate in natural disaster response (e.g., tornado, flood, blizzard, windstorm).
• Knowledge of snow removal and salting operations.
