Job summary

Backblaze is seeking a Sr. Manager of Software Engineering for Computer Backup. You will lead the desktop client and backend services, drive architectural decisions, and manage budget and staff, in a remote-first environment.

You'll guide agile processes, collaborate with product leadership on roadmaps, and champion AI-assisted development practices to deliver reliable data backup solutions at scale.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of engineering management experience, including managing managers or team leads.
• Experience setting long-term technical direction and system architecture for a growing product or platform.
• Experience owning multi-quarter technical and delivery strategy and helping shape a product roadmap.
• Experience negotiating scope, schedule, and priorities with product and senior leadership.
• Accountability for a team or departmental budget, including resourcing and investment decisions.
• Deep experience with agile development processes, including scrum, sprint planning, backlog management, estimation, and retrospectives.
• Demonstrated experience managing distributed, remote engineering teams, including async communication and remote collaboration practices.
• Strong software engineering background with deep expertise in system architecture and hands-on design decisions.

Responsibilities

• Lead the full Computer Backup engineering team, with Desktop and Backend Leads.
• Set the long-term technical direction for Computer Backup and ensure architecture decisions scale with growth.
• Own the multi-quarter delivery strategy and negotiate roadmaps with Product leadership.
• Hold accountability for budget and headcount, tooling, and infrastructure investments.
• Make architectural and organizational decisions with broad, long-term impact.
• Ensure desktop and backend areas operate with a unified agile process.
• Oversee agile ceremonies across both areas and ensure consistent delivery.
• Own delivery from planning through deployment and post-launch support with QA partners.
• Ensure reliability, performance, and maintainability of the backup client and backend services.
• Champion unit testing and automated coverage as core practice.
• Participate hands-on in code reviews and architectural decisions across desktop/server work.
• Champion AI-augmented workflows and agentic coding practices.
