Senior Software Engineer, Texas Institute for Electronics

Location: Austin, TX. Weekly Hours: 40. FLSA Status: To Be Determined at Offer. Earliest Start: Ongoing. Position Duration: Expected to Continue. Hiring Department: Texas Institute for Electronics. Position Open To: All Applicants.

About Us The Texas Institute for Electronics (TIE) is a University of Texas at Austin-supported semiconductor consortium of state and local government, defense electronics and semiconductor companies, national labs and nationally recognized academic institutions. Our mission is to develop and execute a state‑of‑the‑art 3D Heterogeneous Integration manufacturing technology roadmap, and to provide critical pilot manufacturing capabilities to address national security needs and catalyze domestic economic growth.

Purpose The Senior Software Engineer will lead and contribute to software and controls development for advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment and processes. This role emphasizes innovation in areas such as logic, memory, heterogeneous integration, chip cooling, and image processing technologies.

Responsibilities
  • Lead software development for novel semiconductor manufacturing equipment, including control systems and automation software
  • Design and implement software for image processing and computer vision applications in semiconductor inspection and metrology
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate hardware and software subsystems
  • Develop and maintain software requirements, architecture, and documentation
  • Support procurement and evaluation of equipment sub-systems
  • Participate in research and development activities to advance semiconductor manufacturing capabilities
  • Other related functions as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in software engineering or related fields
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++, Python, and MATLAB
  • Experience with control and simulation tools such as Simulink
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, object‑oriented programming, build systems, and version control
  • Demonstrated experience with software requirements and specifications
  • Hands‑on experience with image processing or computer vision algorithms and tools
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to work in collaborative, fast‑paced environments
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in a relevant technical field
  • Experience in research or start‑up environments
  • Prior experience in software development for hardware control and instrumentation
  • Experience with image processing libraries (e.g., OpenCV, MATLAB Image Processing Toolbox)
  • Familiarity with machine vision systems used in semiconductor or high‑tech manufacturing
  • Experience developing real‑time or embedded software systems
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed on‑site in a scientific research environment, with dynamic work conditions and frequent interruptions
  • May work around standard office conditions
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation
  • Use of manual dexterity (e.g., using a mouse)
Work Shift
  • Monday – Friday, flexible between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Work outside standard office hours may be required on an occasional basis during peak periods and special events
