Job summary

Google’s Release Channel team seeks a software engineer to balance release velocity with production stability for BigQuery’s channels. You will drive capacity management strategy, solve complex distributed systems challenges, and partner with Workload Management to define a multi-year roadmap across components forming channelization.

The role requires leading technical initiatives, mentoring engineers, and delivering scalable backend solutions for Google Cloud Platform.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of software development experience.
  • Minimum 3 years building large-scale infrastructure or distributed systems.
  • 3 years testing, maintaining, or launching software products; 1 year in design/architecture.
  • Experience in Backend, Cloud and Large-Scale Distributed Systems.

Responsibilities

  • Write and test product or system development code.
  • Lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders to decide among technologies.
  • Review and provide feedback on code for best practices and reliability.
  • Contribute to documentation and educate teams on product updates.
  • Triage issues and diagnose impacts on hardware, network, or services.

Job description

Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages.
  • 3 years of experience with developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies or storage.
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.
  • Experience in the following: Backend, Cloud, Large-Scale Distributed Systems.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Master\'s degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • Experience with Capacity Management and Capacity Planning; designing and building high-performance backend systems, particularly solving challenges in capacity planning, resource fragmentation, constrained resource allocation, or dynamic provisioning.
  • Experience programming in C++.
  • Experience with Big Data.
  • Deep understanding of large-scale distributed systems, including compute/resource scheduling, workload management, or high-scale data analytics infrastructure.
  • Proven track record of providing technical leadership, defining long-term technical goal, and driving multi-year architectural roadmaps in highly ambiguous domains, with demonstrated experience leading and mentoring other SWEs.

As a part of the Release Channel team, your mission is to balance continuous release velocity with production stability through automated, multi-tiered rollout channels in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) BigQuery.
In this role, you will serve as a core technical leader driving the long-term goal, strategy, and architecture for BigQuery\u2019s release channel capacity management. You will solve complex distributed systems and capacity fragmentation challenges and partner closely with Workload Management to define and execute a shared, multi-year roadmap that fuels the horizontal growth and expansion of release channels across all components in BigQuery. You will navigate high technical ambiguity and address deep distributed systems challenges, resolving severe capacity constraints and large-scale resource fragmentation to ensure sustainable and high stability growth of channelization.

  • Write and test product or system development code.
