Job summary

Atomic Machines in Emeryville and Santa Clara, CA is hiring a seasoned software engineer to advance the Matter Compiler platform. You will design distributed systems, ensure real-time reliability, and drive architecture across cloud/on-prem and edge with hardware/process teams.

Responsibilities include API-driven machine control, observability, CI/CD adoption, and translating physical constraints into robust software behavior. Equity and benefits accompany the package.

Qualifications

• 5+ years building or debugging systems with real external dependencies: hardware, embedded devices, networked services, or similar.
• Experience making and defending nontrivial architecture decisions — build vs. buy, deployment topology, service boundaries.
• Strong Python skills for production systems, plus proficiency in at least one systems or strongly-typed language (C++, Rust, or Go).
• Solid grounding in distributed systems fundamentals: state coordination, consistency, failure modes, concurrency.
• Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, or observability tooling.

Responsibilities

• Design and build distributed software systems coordinating state, timing, and behavior across manufacturing hardware.
• Write, test, and debug sensors, actuators, and process controllers under real-time and reliability constraints.
• Bridge manual and automated process steps and coordinate handoffs between production and process development.
• Evolve the existing system, including API development to govern machine behavior across our fleet.
• Instrument systems so data is legible for humans and ML pipelines.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to translate physical constraints into software behavior.
