Job summary

Atomic Machines in California is seeking a Senior/Staff Software Engineer to design and build distributed software that coordinates state, timing, and behavior across the machine-control fleet. This role sits at the intersection of software, hardware, and process engineering.

You will work with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to converge architectures, drive testing and observability, and champion CI/CD and rigorous validation as we bring the Matter Compiler platform online.

Qualifications

• 5+ years building or debugging systems with external dependencies.
• A track record of defending nontrivial architecture decisions — build vs. buy, deployment topology, service boundaries.
• Strong Python and at least one systems language (C++, Rust or Go).
• Experience with CI/CD and observability tooling in a codebase lacking it.

Responsibilities

• Design and build distributed software systems coordinating state, timing, and behavior across manufacturing hardware.
• Design workflows bridging manual and automated process steps.
• Evolve the existing system, including API development to govern machine behavior across the fleet.
• Instrument systems so data is legible for humans and ML/AI pipelines.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to translate physical constraints into software behavior.
• Establish testing, review, CI/CD, and documentation practices.
