Job summary

The New York Times is seeking a backend engineer to support data infrastructure for 1:1 personalization experiments across the homepage, story pages, and mobile apps. You’ll join the News Product Foundations team and report to the Senior Engineering Manager in Reader experience Technology.

You’ll build real-time data pipelines with Kubernetes and Kafka, maintain a federated GraphQL personalization subgraph, and contribute to back-end systems that improve content discovery while upholding our

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience with backend-focused programming languages (Node/TypeScript, Go, Java, Python).
• 3+ years of experience with cloud-based deployments on AWS or Google Cloud Platform.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and optimization of data and technical infrastructure connecting our ML platform to editorial tools and surfaces.
• Build real-time systems using Kubernetes and Kafka to reflect newsroom pace.
• Maintain Personalization subgraph in a federated GraphQL architecture.
• Contribute to back-end systems that improve content discovery and product quality.
• Uphold journalistic independence and our mission to seek the truth.
• May require limited on-call hours with schedule determined on joining.
