Job summary

Compass in Seattle is seeking a Senior Engineer for the Streaming & Durability team to own the data layer across thousands of tenants. You will design, deploy, and operate the core database and caching stack while building tenant-safe SDKs in Go, Java, and Python to accelerate engineering velocity.

You will lead fleet upgrades with zero downtime, scale Kafka/MSK infrastructure, and develop observability to reveal performance insights before customers notice issues.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience building and operating distributed systems, with depth in at least one major managed database (PostgreSQL or similar) at production scale in AWS.
• Built shared tooling (SDKs, client libraries, platform APIs) for infrastructure access by engineers.
• Think in trade-offs and explain choices between boundaries and flexibility.
• Proficient in Go and comfortable with Terraform, Kubernetes, and IAM-heavy AWS environments.
• Led cross-team operational programs including change management, migration coordination, and rollback planning.

Responsibilities

• Design and operate the database and caching fleet (PostgreSQL, Redis, DynamoDB) that underpins Compass's core products.
• Build multi-tenant data isolation with Go, Java, and Python SDKs to enforce tenant-safe access patterns.
• Own production database upgrades at fleet scale with zero downtime.
• Build and scale Kafka/MSK streaming infrastructure and deployment strategies.
• Develop deep observability with dashboards and telemetry to understand system behavior.
• Partner with product and platform teams to scale workloads and resolve major incidents.
