Job summary

Grainger is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Software Engineer III) for its Chicago-area team. You will design, code, test, and support software across on-prem and cloud platforms, delivering solutions on time and within budget.

You’ll mentor junior engineers and collaborate with product managers to translate business requirements into technical designs. The role requires working in the Chicago office 2 days per week, with a broad stack including IBM MDM, DataStage, Airflow, Kubernetes,

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
• 3+ years experience designing, building, and deploying scalable software.
• Understanding of distributed system design.
• Experience with Agile/Scrum and DevOps practices.
• 3+ years with IBM MDM, REST API endpoints, PME tuning.
• 3+ years developing Java Spring Boot microservices.
• 3+ years Kubernetes, Istio, and service mesh tech.
• 3+ years Kafka and event-driven data flows.
• 3+ years DataStage and Apache Airflow.
• 3+ years Linux environments with shell scripting.

Responsibilities

• Build applications and develop scalable software solutions with engineers, architects, and analysts.
• Utilize frontend/backend/full stack skills as required.
• Implement continuous delivery activities (CI/CD) and drive engineering best practices.
• Support team activities and pair with peers on stories.
• Coach and mentor junior engineers.
• Work across IBM MDM, DataStage, Airflow, Kubernetes, and related tech.
• Operate in CI/CD and trunk-based development environments.
