Job summary

WEX, Inc. is seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer to help transform fleet payments with agentic, scalable solutions powering our fuel card platform. You will design and develop capabilities that delight internal and external customers, laying the foundation for new products and services.

The role focuses on building cloud-native systems using Java, AWS, Kafka, Elasticsearch, containers, and API-driven architectures to deliver impactful outcomes for customers and the business.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.
• 7+ years of software engineering experience designing, developing, and supporting enterprise-scale applications.
• Strong experience building cloud-based applications and infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code practices.
• Proficiency with event streaming platforms such as Kafka.
• Experience with Elasticsearch, including indexing strategies and queries.
• Experience with AWS cloud platforms.
• Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, OOP, and system design.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deliver agentic, scalable software solutions using Java, Kafka, Elasticsearch, and cloud-native platforms.
• Contribute to architecture and design decisions for highly available, secure systems.
• Build, test, and maintain clean, efficient code with strong API backends.
• Develop and optimize RESTful APIs and backend services.
• Participate in code reviews and collaborative problem-solving sessions.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical challenges.
• Stay current with emerging technologies to improve engineering practices.
• Ensure excellent customer experiences across products and systems.
