Job summary

Copper is hiring a Software Engineer in Berkeley to build and scale software connecting our appliances, cloud, and customer apps. You will own end-to-end features across cloud, mobile, and internal tools, and collaborate with hardware teams to integrate with real devices.

You will design robust data pipelines, ship production-grade software, and contribute to automated testing and reliability. Expect on-site work four days weekly in Berkeley, CA with a mission-driven team.

Qualifications

• Professional software development experience.
• Ability to tackle ambiguous technical problems from definition to execution.
• Experience designing and building cloud-based systems (AWS or similar), including distributed systems and data pipelines.
• Comfort with modern web/app stack: TypeScript and/or Python, React frontends, SQL/databases.
• Experience building production-quality systems with reliability, automated testing, and long-term ownership.
• Ability to work across teams and communicate clearly with engineers, operators, and stakeholders.
• Thrives in ambiguity and takes ownership of outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Own the design, implementation, and evolution of critical software systems spanning cloud infrastructure, mobile applications, and internal tools.
• Design, implement, test, and ship features across cloud, mobile app, and internal tools used by customers, installers, manufacturing, and operations teams.
• Own and grow data pipelines and cloud systems powering fleet visibility, analytics, and participation in programs such as virtual power plants.
• Collaborate with hardware, firmware, manufacturing, and product teams to build software that integrates with real devices and workflows.
• Refine feature requirements, balancing user needs, system complexity, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
• Partner with engineering leadership to shape technical direction and prioritize high-impact work.
• Support mobile releases and QA, with a bias toward automation and repeatable processes.
• Ship high-quality code, thoughtful design, and practice strong engineering principles.
• Contribute to code reviews and mentor other engineers through hands-on collaboration.
• As the system matures, help support operational needs, including occasional on-call incident response outside of normal business hours.
