Job summary

IonQ, Inc. is hiring a Platform Reliability Engineer to build, secure, and operate scalable cloud-based infrastructure for our quantum computing platform. You will own production reliability, observability, and incident response across the platform with on-prem components deployed at customer sites.

We value hands-on experience with AWS or GCP, strong leadership across multiple teams, and a track record of reducing outages and improving availability through disciplined practices and automation.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of production engineering experience with recent reliability work.
• Hands-on experience operating large-scale fault-tolerant production systems on AWS or GCP.
• Observability ownership: instrumented production systems and governed service-level objectives and error budgets.
• Resilience practice: designed and executed failure experiments or disaster-recovery exercises with real failover validation.
• Incident command: personally commanded SEV1/SEV2 incidents and drove root cause to a systemic fix.
• Demonstrated ownership of reliability outcomes with measurable results, such as availability and MTTR.
• Evidence of multi-team technical leadership through standards, review, coaching, and cross-team mechanisms.

Responsibilities

• Own service-level objectives and production reliability end-to-end.
• Design and operate the observability stack for fully instrumented production services.
• Define and manage SLIs/SLOs and run regular reviews with service owners.
• Design and execute chaos experiments and validate failure modes with safeguards.
• Lead incident response as incident commander for high-severity incidents.
• Run on-call rotations and escalation paths with clean handoffs.
• Own disaster-recovery testing and improvements.
• Co-own cloud security posture with DevSecOps.
• Ensure reliability of stateful and streaming services and guide capacity planning.
• Mentor engineers and scale the team behind a reliability roadmap.
